Digital Edens
49 Palms Oasis
A few mile hike over jagged hills with brisk winds took me to a 150 year old oasis originally planted by miners to show the location of remote spring. Gentle breezes rustle the palms like tinfoil, and a subtle cool shade add a sensory element to the landscape.

Landscapes for me reflect a mythical connection to an Earthly place and time. Landscapes weave sensual experiences that combine the visual experience with auditory, olfactory and tactile memories. Using digital layering I make composite images that represent the complexity of senses that build a landscape memory. On a global scale, digital photography has reduced much imagery to visual noise and promotes impulsive consumption of photos while data storage is actively consuming the earth's resources. With my work I don’t seek to hide the digital impact on everything in our current reality I seek to absorb it into the natural processes that create a landscape. Using strategic patterns of duplication and erosion I can synthesize a new connection to a landscape with simple snapshots from my iPhone camera, but I am able to create a profound reality that despite the digital consumption of our world, the landscape still wins.
